CAST will provide an opportunity for students to work with social workers and counselors in the EPI SD, Ysleta, and San Flizano school districts. Volunteers will be asked to do a myriad of tasks such as research, paper work, interviews, tutoring, supervising, phone interviewing and answering. The agency is requesting only Social Work, Sociology and Psychology majors. Ten volunteers will only be placed at this agency.

To join forces with UTEP faculty and students in providing literacy classes to adult Mexican students residing in El Paso. Fluency in Spanish a MUST, training and certification by the Mexican Department of Education, classes are required to meet 3 hours a week either during the week or on Saturday. Supplies and mileage will be provided. Classes will take place in different areas of the city.

The Shelter for Battered Women provides housing, social work services, and guidance for women and children seeking protection from abusive husbands. Volunteers must take a ten-hour training session and make a greater commitment than the PRAXIS minimum. Volunteers can work on the hotline, help with childcare, or make presentations at health fairs. (Basic Requirements: 40 hours & 20 hours on the job training). Apply early-background checks are required.

Volunteers will assist attorneys on trial days by helping to check witnesses and will have the opportunity to observe the trial. Volunteers will also help with filing the large number of photos the Domestic Violence unit receives from area law enforcement agencies. In addition, volunteers will assist with all the clerical work involved in maintaining statistical data and sending court date notices to complaining witnesses (Looking for 7 volunteers).

The Health Connection. The Health Connection features exhibits and activities, which promote health awareness and an understanding of physical and mental health. Students will work with small groups of visitors to the Health Connector’s exhibits, allowing for hands on activities while giving a ten-minute lesson at each exhibit. There is a orientation that students must attend in order to prepare them for their volunteer experience. The number of volunteers needed is unlimited.

Volunteer work at the Museum is primarily general office work. In addition you will learn how to set up tours, call docents to conduct the tours, and at times, greet visitors. Answering the phone is extremely important because we must give out correct directions and hours of operation.

The El Paso Police Department-Domestic Abuse Response Team is a specialized unit based out of the Northeast command center that provides immediate and follow-up intervention for the victims of domestic violence. Volunteers will mainly aid victims that reside in the Northeast community. Volunteers are needed in the office and in the field. Volunteers would ride out Friday and Saturday nights 7:00pm-3:00am in unmarked police vehicles and respond to provide immediate intervention after a domestic violence incident. training consists of 72 hours to be able to assist on weekend and evening ride out shifts. Applications need to be submitted early for a required background check.

Volunteers are involved in extensive interaction with victims, to include crisis intervention and stabilization, referral to outside agencies for counseling, protective orders, food vouchers, medical assistance, etc. Volunteers also help victims fill out and file an application with the office of the Attorney General in order to access funds to help with the financial burden of crime. (Apply early-background checks are required).

The El Paso Library-Clardy Fox Branch requests reading mentors to start a Book Club for middle school kids that need assistance. Being that we are so close to the border, the majority of the children in this community have a hard time retaining the English that they have learned while in school. We hope that reading will encourage children to visit the library, bring in their families, and practice their reading and English. Project: Mentors Reading Club/Book Club

Assistance is needed in regard to the El Papalote Day Care. It is an inclusive day care for children, ages 6 weeks to 6 years with special emphasis on children with development delays. The day care is operated by the El Paso Rehabilitation Center, which has provided therapeutic and educational services to children with disabilities since 1948.
